Chapter 11
The arcane academy has many hopefuls. Many learn too late of the stringent discipline required. Hence, why there are few mages. Some schools mislead students into believing the art is extremely difficult. In truth, it is simple. The lack of discipline taught destroys the youthful minds. They become drunken power mongers, which eventually causes their demise.
Imperial academy
Dregous slipped, fell and sailed from the saddle a few times before his patience narrowed. He grabbed the reins firmly, mounted the beast, remembering what Tatiana told him. “Throw me again, and your days of carrying anything will end…!” he hissed.
“Oh, be nice… the poor thing,” Tatiana said. “It does not understand,” unsuccessfully suppressing her laughter.
“Yes of course, I suppose it is funny. You are not the one being tossed like a child’s toy. Let us see how you would fare if it is you flying…” he paused and looked at her wings. “Please… do not say it,” he grumbled.
Tatiana laughed harder. He gave her a stern look. “I did not say a thing,” she replied, and bit her lips to keep from laughing.
“Oh, I hope not,” he mimicked displeasure as a soft smile broke through his stone face curling his lips. “That is not fair,” he whispered.
“Come… let us distance this place,” she said between giggles, “before you are thrown off again!” and laughed aloud. The sound of her laughter was musical, her smile breath taking. He could have summoned a phantom mount but chose not to. Riding a real beast presented an opportunity to learn something new. He steadied the beast then they rode until the sun bled its final moments and filled the sky with a soft crimson hue. It highlighted the rippled stretched clouds with reddish tint. The warmth gave way to the chilled night. Only the scent of the forest made the dankness pleasant. He welcomed the night. It made him feel more like home. Shadows came to life in the midst of the twilight hour. They appeared to dance, celebrating the falling sun with a silent rhythmic ritual.
The princess suggested setting camp. He insisted on traveling a bit more, which she reluctantly agreed. He was unwilling to see his magical moment end. They set camp at a small clearing. Tatiana gathered some wood to start a fire while Dregous prepared their sleeping blankets. She was unsuccessful, after which, he joined her, “May I?”
“I can manage. Lukous taught me how,” she replied. “I am not helpless.” she said politely.
“If I may…,” he crouched in front of her. “There is a quicker way,” he gently took the flint stone from her and set it aside.
She looked at him. His cool hand on hers made her heart skip. “And how are you…” she started.
Dregous gave her a knowing smile, “I know you are not helpless.”
She blushed, “Very well,” she regretted not paying attention when Lukous started the fires.
He took a fagot and chanted. His tone intensified as he repeated the incantation while rubbing it between thumb and forefinger. Seconds later flames flared on the third verse.
